Gartner Critical Capabilities for Network Firewalls Report

The Gartner Critical Capabilities for Network Firewalls report assesses vendors on their ability to deliver on specific network firewall use cases. This report is closely related to the Gartner Magic Quadrant™ for Network Firewalls, which is another widely used resource for security professionals.

Gartner says “Network firewall vendors are expanding their product portfolios to meet the demands of organizations that are trying to consolidate their security solutions under a single vendor”.

By offering a broader range of security services, vendors can make it easier for organizations to manage their security posture. Firewall vendors need to ensure their solutions are scalable and offer the ability to monitor and secure traffic across multiple environments. This is particularly important as organizations continue to migrate their workloads to the cloud. As such, Gartner evaluates firewall vendors based on their ability to deliver on specific use cases, such as cloud security, application security, and data center security.

Report Methodology

The report consists of vendors, Critical Capabilities, and Use Cases.

  1. Vendors

The report only includes vendors that meet specific inclusion criteria, such as having a market presence in the evaluated product/service class, having a certain revenue threshold, and meeting certain customer and geographic requirements. Cybersecurity vendors such as Check Point, Cisco, Fortinet, and  Palo Alto Networks are some of the 17 vendors included in the report, but public cloud vendors Alibaba Cloud, AWS, Huawei and Microsoft are also recognized.

  1. Critical Capabilities

The report defines nine Critical Capabilities and scores the vendors against each:

  • Central Management and Reporting
  • Scalability
  • Ease of Use
  • Advanced Networking
  • Application Control
  • FWaaS
  • Intrusion Prevention and ATD
  • Public Cloud Support
  • Pricing
  1. Use Cases

The report then uses the critical capabilities to build weighted totals for five use cases:

  1. Enterprise Data Center
  2. Enterprise Edge
  3. Distributed Enterprise
  4. Public Cloud
  5. SMB
