Check Point Harmony Email & Collaboration successfully blocked over 14,000 phishing emails on Kamloops’ servers that evaded the previous email protection

Business email compromise is a type of spear phishing attack in which cyber criminals use business tools to trick users into sending them money. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, BEC cost organizations around the world more than $10 billion in losses in 2022. Check Point Software Technologies is partnering with the City of Kamloops, B.C. to prevent business email compromise (BEC) cyberattacks, while adding an additional layer of protection to the city’s cybersecurity infrastructure.

With nearly 100,000 residents, Kamloops is known both for its friendly community spirit and for being Canada’s Tournament Capital. The city hosts a plethora of amateur sports, tournaments, cultural events, high performance training camps and national and international competitions throughout the year. For the City of Kamloops, ensuring the availability of the City’s website, digital services, and critical operations is crucial – for both residents and tourists. The city was facing a growing number of business email compromise or “impersonation” emails and phishing attacks, targeting the Mayor and Council Members daily. To prevent these attacks, the city decided to implement Check Point Harmony Email & Collaboration for its complete protection for cloud email and collaboration apps. Harmony Email & Collaboration detects and prevents advanced phishing attacks, impersonation emails, and emails containing malware across inbound, outbound, and internal communications in real time before they reach inboxes.

“At Check Point, we believe that cybersecurity starts with prevention. Check Point’s Harmony Email & Collaboration is the only software that goes beyond detection and response to prevent threats,” said Ronald Dekker, Canadian Country Manager for Check Point Software. “We are honored to work with the City of Kamloops to implement a solution that works within their existing infrastructure to safeguard municipal systems and prevent future attacks.”

With minimal setup, intuitive configuration and a consistently low false positive rate, Check Point provided a comprehensive turnkey solution, adding robust prevention and protection to its cybersecurity arsenal and giving the Kamloops IT and help desk teams more time to focus on citizens’ needs first.

“We take a ‘prevention first’ approach to security in addition to layering protection and having a robust recovery plan in place,” said Piotr Baltakis, Manager of Infrastructure and Security for the City of Kamloops “As we address specific security challenges, we look for solutions that deliver measurable value while enabling us to achieve strategic outcomes.”

Kamloops also relies on four significant enterprise Check Point Quantum Security Gateways to secure its network. Additional Quantum firewalls provide east-west protection for key operational sites and identify and secure more critical SCADA infrastructure applications and traffic. The city is implementing all of Check Point’s industry-leading security measures on the gateways, including SandBlast threat emulation and extraction to analyze files for hidden malware and sanitize incoming documents into safe formats.
